Quick Start
Let's get some music playing. This page takes you from a fresh install to your first track in just a few steps. If you have not chosen an output device yet, do that first (see Installing & First Launch).
1. Pick your sound source#
Open Settings (⌘,) → MIDI Output and select either your hardware synth or the Built-in Software Synth. Close Settings.
2. Open a MIDI file#
- Press
⌘O(File → Open) and choose a.midor.midifile, or - Drag and drop a file (or a whole folder of files) onto the window.
The file loads and the title, format, and details appear.
3. Press play#
- Hit the Space bar (or the play button) to start.
- The visualiser lights up, the LCD bar shows time and tempo, and the music plays to your chosen device.
4. Get around#

Drag the seek bar to jump around, and adjust the volume, tempo, and pitch from the transport controls. See Playback & Transport for all of it.
5. Build a playlist#
Drop several files or folders onto the window to fill the playlist. Turn on shuffle (⌘⇧S) or repeat (⌘⇧R), and PXR will auto-advance through your tracks.
