Playstation 3 E3 Presentation Initial Thoughts

PS3.jpgTo say I am a little bemused is probably the understatement of the year. OK so people who know me will already understand I am a fan of the Microsoft Xbox 360, however even I can appreciate that Microsoft will be watching the Sony space very carefully. After watching 2 hours of mind numbing presentation, I was left feeling very empty of any excitement or desire to purchase a PS3. This though was no great surprise, but I was hoping to see something new and maybe spectacular to really add something for gamers.

First of all, the major lack of any gameplay demonstrations really hurt the presentation in my view, as all we really viewed was a nice replay from Gran Turismo and the so called ‘true’ HD.

This now has made me excited to hear what… no not what Microsoft will have to say, but actually from Nintendo. Although I really dislike the name Nintendo Wii (something I am sure we will discuss in volume 2 of the Xbox 360 Debate blogcast), even I can see that the so called ‘next generation’ just isn’t touching gameplay in anything I have seen so far. It is all graphical!

We will have to see what today brings, with Microsoft and Nintendo making their own presentations.

  • Yes, I agree with what you said. I stayed up last night to watch the E3 Sony Conference and after a few hours, I left with a very disappointing feeling.

I am a gamer at heart so I love it when new games are announced, no matter what console they are for. After sitting through the Sony display I was gobsmacked but not in a good way. Apart from Heavenly Sword (Yes, the bodies do disappear too) I saw nothing that made me think that this is next-gen. Again Sony mentioned that next-gen does not start until they say it does but going by that display next-gen started with the first Xbox.

I am sure Sony fans will be loving the MGS4 footage and Final Fantasy plans but that is a long time to wait for those titles. Hopefully the rest of E3 will highlight what there other games will be for the launch.

Two things shocked me in the Sony conference. 1) The lack of people clapping and cheering at most of the announcements 2) The Price…are they insane? Yes, yes. I have a job, I can afford it but I will not be buying because when it appears on UK shores priced at £399 and £499 I will be leaving it until it gets cheaper. Phew…as for the pad…I will say nothing.

Now it is time for Nintendo and Microsoft to react.

  • It seemed like they don’t realise that we’ve already got all that stuff.

  • Well I am sure we are going to have so much to talk about now in our next collective blogcast for my site. The controller and lack of any rumble?? hmmmm sigh.

  • Yeah, the lack of rumble is very annoying. The whole idea of rumble was the feedback to the player and the PS3 pad will miss out on that. Not a good start to a PS3 life.

  • Ha the cheaper one won’t play blue ray films as it doesn’t have hdmi what a mess!

  • About the only thing looked pretty cool out of it all was that they are releasing the original PS games on the PSP. I can’t wait for that.

  • Not much to talk about either. All of the products they showed seemed to slip into established standards pretty well. I’m still waiting for a 16 bit JRPG or something.
